In the early days of mobile phones, they use to manufacture large and bulky phones. But today, we have lighter and more compact phones on the market that come with all the advanced features that you could ever wish for. There are lots of reasons why that are now smaller. But, one of the main reasons they are getting lighter and compact is their ability to miniaturize the microphone and other parts. Today, you will hardly notice where the microphone is located in most handsets.

If you compare the microphone on various handsets, you will notice a slight difference in their location. There are some in which the microphone is placed at the end of a boom; making sure that the microphone remains close to the mouth of the user. There are various types of book microphones; like those that can be extended and retracted as required.

Some microphones are placed quite down the cable, which makes their level quite low in comparison with the mouth. Because of their placement, they use to move with the cable making your voice becoming fade and loud at times when you talk. However, most of the users then use a clip that can be used with the shirt in order to keep the cable at place.

Another great place to position the microphone is at the earpiece itself. Although it might look as if the microphones are quite far from the mouth of the user but it gives great clarity of voice during conversations and it works really well at this placement.

Some latest microphones (wireless) come with extra features like mute button. Apart from that, some latest microphones come with various optimised features that are programmed in a way that they pick up your voice while ignoring or rejecting the surrounding disturbing sounds like traffic noise, music etc. This is also called as the sound cancelling technology in which any noise is not allowed to enter the microphone.
